Show from the Week of 1/19/2009

Krister Linder
Krister Linder (K)
– The dark knight of Sweden.
The 80’s:
With the alias ”Chris Lancelot” he became known overnight in Sweden for his unmistakable voice in a Swedish film soundtrack (Ingen Kan Älska Som Vi).
The song climbed the charts, sold gold in Sweden and is still regarded the most revered Swedish love song of his generation.
Grace, his band at the time, was topping the charts, touring the land and performing on tv.
But instead of pursuing his exploding career K tells the papers he’s going celibate, burns his stage outfit, shaves his head and leaves the band.
The 90’s:
K forms the pop duo DIVE together with companion Erik Holmberg. They have a hit in Sweden with the song ”Captain Nemo.”
Brittish singer Sarah Brightman discovers it and does her own version, which becomes one of her most popular songs. She names her whole album ”Dive” and releases Captain Nemo on both single, album, Best Of and live-album. But due to reasons still unknown Dive themselves never get to see any money from Brightman’s success with their song.
K again withdraws from the mainstream and goes underground.
1994:
The following years he keeps his mouth shut and instead becomes one of the leading pioneers in independent Swedish electronica. Together with his friends Cari Lekebusch and Adam Beyer he puts out instrumental music on various labels. But instead of allowing a chance of recognition, he persistently kills his projects and re-surfaces with a different label, sound and alias. Throughout the nineties K published works under names like Tupilaq, Yeti, Society, Godkingpriest, Illuminum and Solaroid.
1996:
Under the alias ”Illuminum” K and friend Katarina Eriksson makes an hour long show for Swedish national radio with his self produced music. For this they win the Icaros Prize for best radio show of the year.
Upon receiving the prize, K adresses the commitee and suggests they let him broadcast more radio.
The following year Illuminum produces over ten hours of broadcast shows for the biggest radiochannel in Sweden (P3).
Millenum:
K again withdraws from the public eye to fully devote himself to his soul searching, which has become intense and extreme. K believes his human side obscures his soul and needs to be purged and subdued. He moves to a basement in southern Stockholm and spend days on end lying still in total darkness without food or drink.
On one occasion he embarks on a fast for 21 days, out of which he spends the first seven days without water. His friends and relatives strongly obects to this but he refuses to break the fast before the three weeks have passed.
On the 22:nd day he resumes the intake of food and liquids and decides to never again wage war on his body, but instead fully embrace being human.
K gets a girlfriend and moves to a remote house on the countryside with cats, sheep and horses. He has concluded that both his musical carreer and spiritual endeavors were products of his ego and have therefore decided to leave the music for good.
But here, hours away from the city, in the middle of nature he discovers his true motivation and realizes that even if there were no people left on earth he’d still want to make music, regadless of praise, fame and fortune.
2005:
K re-connects with his old friend director Johan Renck and begins to produce music for his TV commercials. They work together on several big campaigns for brands like H&M, Peugeot and Sagem. But for this K produces only instrumental tracks and never sings on his commercial work.
2006:
K does the soundtrack for ”GITMO – New Rules of War,” a documentary about the prison camps at Guantanamo Bay. Again an instrumental score. For this he wins the first prize in the category Best Music for TV at the European Soundtrack Awards in France.
Twelve years after his last vocal album (Dive), K releases ”Songs From the Silent Years” in his own name on his independent label Ghostfriend.
It’s a hard time for the music industry and labels do their best to protect themselves from illegal downloading and pirating. But instead of worrying K offers his album for free from his website and encourages friends and fans to spread his music freely on the Internet.
2007:
K leaves the countryside and moves back to Stockholm.
He is invited to conferences and events around Europe to speak about his different approach to his carreer and share his view on the music industry.
He also begins to collaborate with friends and sing on selected works of other producers.
(Vacuum ”They Do It”, Seba ”Blaze & Fade Out”, Vibraphere ”Tierra Azul”, Omnimotion ”Dream Wide Awake”, Björn Berglund ”The Essence”, I Awake ”Inferno”)
2008:
K does a thirty second piece for FENDI’s perfume commercial ”Palazzo” (director Johan Renck).
In contrast to this he also scores Iranian film director Nahid Persson’s documentary ”Four Wives and a Husband.”
In November 08 K's soundtrack for Johan Renck’s feature film ”Downloading Nancy” wins the first prize in the category Best Music at the Stockholm International Filmfestival.
K is thereby the second person in the world to receive the award since it was installed in 2007, when it went to legendary composer Howard Shore (Lord of the Rings).
2009:
K is currently composing the score for animated feature film Metropia, starring the voices of Juliette Lewis, Vincent Gallo and Udo Kier, and after that plans to focus entirely on his own work and begin the recording of his second vocal solo album in February.
”I used live to get.
I wanted this and that.
I longed for fame, wealth and what not.
But everything I accomplished or aquired
left me empty and unsatisfied.
Now I have come to realize that as a man child,
I’m a son of the sun.
And just like the sun, my essential nature
will never be satisfied by ”getting”.
We are essentially givers,
and unless we get to give what we got
we live and die unfulfilled.
My gift is simple: I can sing.
So this year I pray for a chance to give more and more
of what I’ve been given,
so that when my time on Earth is up
I can leave in peace.”
